Mike's Group Experience:

My first group was as a student co-therapist in 1967. It was with a group of incarcerated Hispanic heroin addicts. Since that time I have conducted groups with juvenile delinquents, psychiatric inpatients, WWII veterans, graduate social work students, British social workers in the field, mixed heterosexual groups, mixed groups of gay men and lesbians, Transactional Analysis groups, psychodrama groups, t-groups, encounter groups, weekend marathon groups, and assertiveness training groups. My first group for gay men was in 1969. I was a group work specialist while in graduate school, a group work instructor at a school of social work in England, and a group therapy specialist for a number of mental health agencies. Since beginning my private practice in Denver in 1977 I have continuously done at least one group for gay men. My first HIV group was in 1987, and the Tuesday HIV group ran continuously from 1990 to 2002. As the nature of the epidemic has changed, both in terms of meds and who is infected, this group has been discontinued for the time being. The gay men's group has continued to the present time, and is usually full with a waiting list.
